A peep into the hospitality sector in India

The World Economic Forum ranks India as the 40th most favored destination for tourists out of 185 countries – in its Travel and Tourism Competitiveness report 2017. Similarly, according to a research by World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC), India has been one of the most favorite tourist destinations since 2009.

This has made travel, tourism and hospitality as one of the most lucrative sectors among the top 10 sectors in India to attract high Foreign Direct Investment (FDI).

Between 2000 and 2018, an estimated US$12 billion has been pumped into India as FDI by international hotel chains – as per sector report by the Department of Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT).

The second largest hotel is The Palazzo and The Venetian located in the Las Vegas strip. It has 7117 rooms located on a 53 storied building. MGM Grand and The Signature hotels with a combined total of 6852 rooms holds the record for third largest hotel in the world. Las Vegas has 26 of the world’s top 100 largest hotels. That is roughly 1/4th of all the largest hotels in the world.

2. The world’s tallest hotel spanning 356 meters was opened in Dubai last year with 528 rooms.  The Gevora Hotel situated at the heart of the United Arab Emirates at the Sheikh Zayed Road has 75 floors and holds the Guinness World Record at present.  It took a whopping 12 years to build it at a cost of US$140 million.

As civilization grew, the needs of people also started growing. People traveled all over the world on foot – for work, on business, on pilgrimage etc. The concept of hotel or a place to stay was in existence since early civilization. Hospitality to travelers or guests were a thing since biblical times. Greeks had developed thermal baths in most villages which provided a place for rest and rejuvenation. Similarly mansions were built by the Romans specifically for travelers who were on government business.

When silk route was established, caravanserais were established on roadsides which facilitated travelers with a place to rest during their commercial journey. This supported commercial travel across Asia, North Africa, Southeast Europe and China. In South Asia and India, the concept of Thinnai was very popular. Thinnai is an elevated place in front of the main door of the house. While the owners of the house and their family stayed inside the house, travelers rested in thinnai. The owners used to serve excess food / drinks to travelers who stay in thinnai.
